令和２年12月８日、区立東板橋公園内に、「板橋こども動物園」がリニューアルオープンしました。
こども動物園は1975年に設立し、40年の長きに渡り区民の皆さまに親しまれてきましたが、施設の老朽化に伴う改修工事のため、平成30（2018）年から長期休園していました。
これまで培われてきた『にぎわい』と『憩い』を継承しつつ、草屋根や壁面緑化による環境負荷軽減への取組や、やぎの高い場所へのぼる習性を活かした橋渡りなど、動物の生態や行動を観覧できる仕掛けや絵本に親しめるキッズルームを設け、子育て世代が快適に楽しめる施設に生まれ変わりました。
また、平成14（2002）年度に災害時相互援助協定締結以来、災害派遣・観光交流・交流研修など様々な面で関係を深めてきた山形県最上町と「SDGsの推進を見据えた森林資源等の活用における覚書」を締結し、園内ベンチには最上町の木材を活用しています。
事業者からは廃棄予定の野菜等を提供してもらい、動物たちのエサとして活用しているほか、馬糞を農家に引き取っていただき堆肥化しています。
今後は地元の商店街や学校とも連携し、地域の賑わい創出、協働によるまちづくりに取り組んでいく予定です。
人の動きによって生まれる地域の賑わい（経済）、施設の壁面・屋根の緑化による省エネルギー化の推進や動物を通して生物多様性を学ぶ教育（環境）など、動物園を核に様々な仕掛けを展開することで、三側面の統合的な発展を目指すＳＤＧｓのモデルケースとして広く周知をしていきます。
今後、こども動物園が子どもたちの夢をかなえ、家族やコミュニティを育み、オンラインでは得られない実体験やコミュニケーションが深まる施設として多くの方々に利用していただくことを願っています。

On December 8, 2020, "Itabashi Children's Zoo" reopened in Higashi Itabashi Park.
The Children's Zoo was established in 1975 and has been a favorite of the local residents for 40 years, but was closed for an extended period of time beginning in 2018 due to renovation work associated with the aging facilities.
While maintaining the "liveliness" and "relaxation" that have been cultivated up to now, we have made efforts to reduce environmental impact through grass roofs and wall greening, and created mechanisms for viewing animal ecology and behavior, such as a bridge crossing that takes advantage of the goats' habit of climbing up to high places.
In addition, a children's room has been created where children can become familiar with picture books, making it a zoo that can be comfortably enjoyed by the child-rearing generation.
In addition, since the signing of a mutual aid agreement in 2002, we have deepened our relationship with Mogami Town in Yamagata Prefecture in various areas such as disaster relief, tourism exchange, and exchange training. We have concluded a "Memorandum of Understanding on the Utilization of Forest Resources, with a view to promoting the SDGs" and the benches in the park are made of timber from Mogami Town.
Businesses provide us with vegetables and other items that are scheduled to be discarded, which we use to feed the animals, and farmers take in horse manure to be turned into compost.
In the future, we plan to collaborate with local shopping districts and schools to create a lively community and work together for community development.
The zoo will be the core of a variety of initiatives, such as the promotion of energy conservation by greening the walls and roofs of the facility and education on biodiversity through animals (environment). We will then make this widely known as a model case for the integrated development of the three aspects of the SDGs. We hope that many people will use the Children's Zoo as a facility that fulfills children's dreams, fosters family and community, and deepens real-life experiences and communication that cannot be obtained online.
